ALTON — Workers from Meyer Landscaping Inc. were spraying a mixture of grass seed and fertilizer onto the bare areas Thursday at the new Alton-Godfrey Rotary Park across from the Alton City Hall at the corner of East 3rd and Easton streets.

Nearly completed, the park will feature a plaza and amphitheater-style seating for 200 people. It is designed to become a destination for weddings, picnics, concerts and classroom instruction for nearby Marquette Catholic High School.

The park is a joint effort of the club and the city. Its construction coincides with the club's centennial year.

Initially the project was expected to be completed by the end of 2021. Ground was broken in October 2021, but construction did not begin until June of this year.

The park is the latest addition to the Riverbend by the club. It also has helped provide landmarks such as fountains, the Robert Wadlow statue, the Lincoln/Douglas sculptures, the Gordon Moore Park Hosta Garden, the YWCA playground, the riverboat mural, the Haskell Park pavilion, the Riverfront Park bike trail extension and the Lavista Park Disc Golf tee pads.
